These are some of the combinations we often suggest to guests.
1. The first-timer option: Llanberis Path
If this is your first time climbing Yr Wyddfa, keeping things simple is usually the best choice.

- Walk the Llanberis Path to the summit
- Return the same way
Llanberis is one of the easiest places to start your day. There are several car parks, toilets, cafés and shops, and the route is straightforward to follow.

2. A bit more adventure: Pyg Track up, Llanberis Path down
Want to experience some of the more dramatic sections of Yr Wyddfa but still make life easy?
This is one of our favourite combinations.
Plan:
- Park in Llanberis
- Catch the Sherpa bus to Pen y Pass
- Walk up via the Pyg Track or Miners’ Track
- Descend via the Llanberis Path back to your car
The advantage of this route is that you experience two completely different sides of the mountain. The Pyg and Miners’ Tracks feel much more rugged, while the Llanberis Path gives you a longer, steadier descent.
It also means you don’t need to worry about getting back to Pen y Pass after a long day.
The Llanberis Path is the longest of the main routes, but it is also one of the most gradual and is a popular choice for first-time walkers.
3. The scenic option: Watkin Path up, Miners’ Track down
For many walkers, this is one of the most beautiful ways to experience Yr Wyddfa.
Plan:
- Park at Pen y Pass
- Catch the Sherpa bus to the Watkin Path
- Walk up the Watkin Path
- Descend via the Miners’ Track back to Pen y Pass
The Watkin Path starts with waterfalls and pools before becoming much more challenging higher up. The final section is steep and scrambly, so it is not a route to underestimate.
The reward is incredible scenery and a quieter approach compared to some of the more popular routes.
4. Our favourite: Rhyd Ddu or Snowdon Ranger
If you’ve already climbed Yr Wyddfa and want something a little different, this is the option we’d recommend.
Plan:
- Catch the S3 Sherpa bus from outside Lodge Dinorwig
- Travel to Rhyd Ddu or Snowdon Ranger
- Walk up to the summit
- Descend via the Pyg Track or Miners’ Track
- Catch the S2 Sherpa bus back towards Deiniolen
- Walk the final 20 minutes back to the hostel
The western side of Yr Wyddfa feels completely different. It is generally quieter, the views are fantastic, and using the bus means you can enjoy a one-way adventure without worrying about returning to your car.
Pen y Pass Car Park
Best for:
- Pyg Track
- Miners’ Track
- Crib Goch
Pen y Pass is the most famous Snowdon car park and the starting point for some of the most popular routes.
It is incredibly convenient, but that also means it gets very busy.

- Closest starting point for the Pyg and Miners’ Tracks

- Sherpa bus stop
- Spectacular views from the start

- It fills quickly during good weather and weekends

Llanberis Parking
Best for:

Llanberis is the easiest option for many visitors, especially first-time walkers.
As well as parking, you’ll find cafés, shops, toilets and places to relax before or after your walk.
It is also a great option if you want to use the Sherpa bus to create a circular route.
Nant Peris Park & Ride
Nant Peris is one of the best alternatives to Pen y Pass.
Instead of trying to park at the busiest starting point, you can leave your car here and catch the Sherpa bus up to Pen y Pass.
This is often the easiest solution for walkers wanting to do the Pyg or Miners’ Track.
Rhyd Ddu Car Park

Rhyd Ddu is a great choice if you want a quieter mountain day.
The route is less crowded than the Llanberis and Pen y Pass approaches and offers beautiful views across Eryri.
